A doctor practicing in his native Maine is married to a New York born choral music teacher. Their only child, home from school for the summer, is working as a part time lobsterman to earn money for graduate school in the fall. He is involved in a love affair with a local single mother. As the beauty of Maine's brief and fleeting summer comes to an end, these characters find themselves in the midst of unimaginable tragedy.
Drama - A very well acted, but also VERY SLOW and somewhat depressing story.
It is very realistic in its portrayal of a greiving family. It will
likely appeal only to adults.
PROFANITY: 7 F-words, 2 S-words Several milder ones. SEX/NUDITY: None VIOLENCE: Two men are killed. A bit graphic, but very little blood. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: One character is constantly smoking plus some drinking. ACTION: None COMEDY: A few funny moments, but it's otherwise an intense drama.

Review Excellent "In the Bedroom is the kind of motion picture that
it's almost impossible to forget. It has an impact that stays with the viewer
long after the theater has been vacated - this is a hallmark of a powerful
movie. It epitomizes what an American independent film can be when the director
is willing to abandon the safety net.''
Review Excellent "In the Bedroom is the first film directed by Todd
Field, an actor ("Eyes Wide Shut," "The Haunting"), and is
one of the best-directed films this year. It works with indirection; the
events on the screen are markers for secret events in the hearts of the
characters, and the deepest insight is revealed, in a way, only in the last
shot. Every performance has perfect tone.. ''
Review Excellent "Positioned for award consideration after months of
positive buzz on the festival circuit, Bedroom succeeds with performances
that get some of their power from imaginative casting. It's tough to
recall such a potent screen treatment of the inability to grieve in a small

OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
These types of movies is where our moviegoer opinions can really help save you some time and money. The critics LOVE "In the Bedroom." This will persuade many of you to see this movie. THE CRITICS ARE WAY OFF! These are THE worst opinions I've ever seen, especially for a mainstream movie.
People were so disappointed as they left the theater filling out their questionnaire. Many commented to me how bad the movie was. Just take a look at all the negative comments they wrote. Sure, there were a few good things about the movie, like the exceptional acting, but the story itself was just slow and boring plus very sad and depressing. The director was obviously going for realism, which doesn't always translate into an interesting movie.
One thing I noticed about the opinions is that there was no opinions of "Fantastic," which is extremely rare. So, even those that enjoyed it didn't think it was as good as the critics indicated it was.
All I can say is if your taste in movies usually runs close to that of critics then you will probably enjoy this movie. Everyone else should save their money.
