Scientist and inventor Alexander Hartdegen is determined to prove that time travel is possible. His determination is turned to desperation by a personal tragedy that now drives him to want to change the past. Testing his theories with a time machine of his own invention, Hartdegen is hurtled 800,000 years into the future, where he discovers that mankind has divided into the hunter... and the hunted.
Sci-Fi Adventure - There's quite a bit of "story" in this movie that some sci-fi fans
may feel slows it down some. It's 30 minutes before the time machine
is used and then it's only used a few times. As in the original, the
last 30 minutes is where most things happen.
PROFANITY: Only a few very mild profanities. SEX/NUDITY: None VIOLENCE: Not much and it's not very graphic. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: None ACTION: Only a few scenes of decent action. COMEDY: Just a few mildly funny comments.

the postapocalyptic jungle setting look like some Hawaiian summer-stock version

Review Average "The best thing I can say about the newest cinematic
version of the H.G. Wells classic is that reading the book won't spoil the film,
because the two have little in common. To say that The Time Machine is 'based
on the novel by H.G. Wells' borders on false advertising.''
Review Below Average "...a witless recycling of the H.G. Wells story from
1895, with the absurdity intact but the wonderment missing.''
Review Average "Homely in all ways, down to its lead actor's unkempt
appearance, this once-intended Christmas release has been demoted to the current
calendar — and for good reason.''

OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
As you can see, the majority of the opinions fall in the "Very Good" to "Good/Avg." range with a few lower and a few higher. This indicates a movie that most thought was good, but few thought was great. Neither age or gender seemed to make a significant difference, although I did notice that most of the higher opinions were from those age 13-29 and the somewhat lower opinions were from mainly adults.
If you think it looks interesting ,but you're not a big sci-fi fan, take a chance and rent it for the entire family. I'm confident you will find it enjoyable enough to feel you've gotten your money's worth.
Publisher Comments: (before opinions collected)
A little bit of a disappointment, but certainly not a bad movie. My expectations were probably higher than they should have been. The special effects were good but nothing special. There was some suspense and some excitement but not a lot. Overall I would give it a rating of "Very Good," but I'm a big sci-fi fan.
I would say sci-fi fans will be satisfied with "The Time Machine," and there's probably enough non sci-fi story to satisfy everyone else.
