Critic's Review Heading
Below Average

The above rating is an average of the critic reviews below.

(Close new window when finished with Full Reviews)

Entertainment Weekly   Full Review
Average "The only thing in the movie that feels at all contemporary, apart from the appearance of Hollywood's prettiest bad actress, Tara Reid, is a gag that's gross enough to cross over into something that even Tom Green might not consider doing with bulldog semen.''

Roger Ebert  Full Review
Poor "Laughter for me was such a physical impossibility during "National Lampoon's Van Wilder" that had I not been pledged to sit through the film, I would have lifted myself up by my bootstraps and fled.''

USA TODAY  Full Review
Poor "This movie is aimed at those like the fun-loving Wilder himself: kids with plenty of discretionary income, lots of extra time and no sense of direction. Or taste. Even by teen gross-out movie standards Van Wilder makes Sorority Boys look like Some Like It Hot.''

TV Guide Online  Full Review
Average "While not for every taste, this often very funny collegiate gross-out comedy goes a long way toward restoring the luster of the NATIONAL LAMPOON film franchise, too long reduced to direct-to-video irrelevancy.''

OPINION OVERVIEW
The following is the original "What's Worth Watching" write-up for this movie.

Moviegoer Opinions:

We collected 107 moviegoer opinions. As expected, most younger males and females rated it very high, with lots of "Fantastic" opinions. A fair number rated it very low, so you'll want to be sure and read all that we offer before deciding to see it. If it still looks like your type of movie, then I recommend it. I'm confident most teens and young adults will enjoy it.

As for adults, the few adult opinions we collected are decent. If you generally enjoy this type of movie, you will probably find this one enjoyable.

Publisher Comments: (before opinions collected)
I thought this was a pretty decent movie and I'm certainly not its target audience. Unlike most "teen" movies, this one actually had a story that wasn't totally stupid. There were even a few "life's lessons" thrown in. But don't worry guys, it still had all the usual teen movie stuff like wild parties, crude and disgusting jokes and of course LOTS of sex.

As with most of these teen movies, the opinions will probably come in very mixed.Younger teens will generally love it. Young adults will likely be very mixed and adults will probably rate it around average.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE
He's the biggest man on campus. He's the boss with the sauce. He's the guy all the girls want and all the guys want to be. Cause in the collegiate jungle, there can be only one king...and at Coolidge College it's Van Wilder.

Van's been "The Man” at Coolidge these past seven years because...when you love a place, why leave it? With a tricked out dorm room, a full-time assistant, a personalized golf cart, and immediate entrée into every club committee, frat house, classroom and administrative office, there's no place he'd rather be, doing the thing he does best: helping out the underdog! With a heart minted in 24k gold, Van uses his influence, wiles and considerable charms to help the "loser" be a winner. Whether it's the foreign exchange student desperate to lose his virginity, the sickest kid on campus or the downcast underclassman who just needs some inspirational, homespun wisdom, Van's always got a solution. The trouble is, this professional student has just learned that after seven blissful years, his principle financier – Dad – has cut him off! Without any tuition money to continue his good work, Van does what any self-respecting, universally admired big-man-on-campus would do – start a business planning the greatest parties any college has ever seen! As the beer flows out and the dough rolls in, Van catches the eye of serious (but sexy) Gwen Pearson, a student journalist who's determined to expose the naked truth beneath Van's wilder exterior. What begins as a clash of wills, however, soon leads to unexpected romance. That is, until Gwen's jealous boyfriend decides to put a stop once and for all to Van's rule as campus king...
