James Berardinelli, Internet Critic
Review Good "For the most part, this is a memorable portrayal of a woman
who doggedly pursued, and died for, an ideal. And, although the final
pre-credits sequence transforms Veronica Guerin into a martyr, the rest of the
film shows her as a flawed, believable human being.''
Review Good "A lot of critics in England disliked it, which is valid
enough, but some of them seemed to confuse Guerin's journalism and Blanchett's
performance. The film ends with the obligatory public funeral, grateful proles
lining the streets while type crawls up the screen telling how much Guerin's
anti-drug crusade accomplished. These are standard prompts for us to get a
little weepy at the heroism of this brave martyr, but actually I think Blanchett
and Schumacher have found the right note for their story.''
Review Above Average "The film's supporting performances are capable and
convincing, but the film belongs to Blanchett, whose star turn as the brazen,
cocky and committed journalist lingers well after the credits have rolled.''

Review Average "Blanchett's insouciant but steely performance alone makes
the film worth watching, but it's Brenda Fricker's quietly underplayed turn as
Guerin's mother that makes your throat tighten.''

In the mid-1990s, Dublin was nothing short of a war zone, with a few powerful drug lords battling for control. Their most fearsome opponent was not the police but the courageous journalist Veronica Guerin (CATE BLANCHETT), who covered the crime beat with unmatched intensity. As she investigated and exposed the "pushers,” balancing her home and family against her responsibility to her readers and her country, she became a national folk heroine to the people of Ireland. Based on a true story.
