Movie Type (Genre) Heading
Drama - Although the advertising plays up the war angle, that only makes up one scene of what is mostly a period drama with a strong romantic theme. Sexual and violent content make the film inappropriate for children, who would be bored, anyhow.

Berardinelli, Internet Critic Full Review
Good The movie has its share of structural problems, and may be a little longer than seems necessary, but it rarely lost my attention. I would not place this in the top echelon of end-of-the-year motion pictures, but it's certainly a successful adaptation, features numerous memorable performances (mostly by the supporting players), and is worth a post-holiday expenditure of time and money.

Roger Ebert Full Review
Good ...it evokes a backwater of the Civil War with rare beauty, and lights up with an assortment of colorful supporting characters. There is so much to enjoy about "Cold Mountain" that I can praise it for its parts, even though it lacks a whole. By the end of the film, you admire the artistry and the care, you know that the actors worked hard and are grateful for their labors, but you wonder who in God's name thought this was a promising scenario for a movie. It's not a story, it's an idea.

OPINION OVERVIEW
The following is the original "What's Worth Watching" write-up for this movie.

Moviegoer Opinions:

We collected 185 moviegoer opinions. Males and females of all ages enjoyed Cold Mountain. Most enjoyed it very much, rating it "Very Good," or higher. However, there were a fair number who only rated it "Good," which indicates an OK but not great movie. Fortunately, only a few rated it as low as "Poor," so I have no problem highly recommending Cold Mountain to everyone AS LONG AS YOU FIRST READ THE DETAILED CONTENT! I believe many of the lower opinions are due to the sexual content.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE
Fearing for the safety of his beloved Ada, the wounded Confederate soldier Inman makes his way across the war-ravaged South, back to her farm on Cold Mountain. He faces trials and tribulations as he encounters slaves and bounty hunters, soldiers and witches, unexpected friends and dangerous enemies at every turn. Ada's road is no easier as she relies on wits and newfound bravery to protect her father's farm from attack, with the help of an intrepid drifter named Ruby.

As they come ever closer, Inman and Ada weave a story about the longing for home after being in the wilderness, the longing for peace after being at war, and the longing for love and union in the midst of chaos.
