Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Very Good ...the comedy is at times too dark and edgy for multiplex viewers in search of something frothy and romantic.
Roger EbertFull Review Above Average The Coens' 'Ladykillers,' on the other hand, is always wildly signaling for us to notice it. Not content to be funny, it wants to be FUNNY! Have you ever noticed that the more a comedian wears funny hats, the less funny he is? The old and new 'Ladykillers' play like a contest between Buster Keaton and Soupy Sales.
USA TodayFull Review Good The Ladykillers is a Southern-style Ocean's 11 without the pretty boys and Vegas attitude but with plenty of laughs.

OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
We collected 291 moviegoer opinions. These are some very mixed opinions. Looking at the graph you can see how the opinions get lower as the age increases. This is most likely due to the extreme profanity and the dark nature of the story, which younger viewers tolerate better than adults. With such mixed opinions it's difficult to use these opinions to make a viewing decision. Some of you will enjoy it very much and many will not. If you go in knowing that it has LOTS of very strong profanity and is a DARK COMEDY then you will likely enjoy it.
Goldthwait Higginson Dorr (Tom Hanks), Ph.D. is a charlatan professor who's assembled a gang of so-called "experts" for the heist of the century. The thieves: experts in explosions, tunneling, and muscle, and the critical "inside man."
The base of operations: the root cellar of an unsuspecting, church-going little old lady named Mrs. Munson (IRMA P. HALL). The ruse: the five need a place to practice their church music. The problem: it quickly becomes evident that Dorr's thieves lack the mental capacity to do the job. The bigger problem: they have all seriously underestimated their upstairs host. When Mrs. Munson stumbles onto their plot and threatens to notify the authorities, the felonious five decide to do her in. After all, how hard can it be to knock off one old lady?
