Benjamin Gates is a third generation treasure hunter. All his life he has been searching for a treasure no one believed existed. Gates' life-long journey leads him to the last place anyone thought to look: a map hidden on the back of the Declaration of Independence. But what he thought was the final clue is only the beginning.
Action Adventure - "National Treasure" is sort of like the "Indiana Jones" movies but
with less action. Like "Indiana Jones" it's suspenseful and fun with
quite a bit of humor. The pace is quick and the story is engaging as
all the clues to the treasure being figured out. And it's believable
for the most part anyway. I did count five instances where what
happened was extremely convenient to the storyline even though it
was highly improbable.
PROFANITY: None SEX/NUDITY: None VIOLENCE: Mostly threatened violence. Certainly nothing remotely graphic. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: None ACTION: A fair amount of action. Nothing grand, but some of it was pretty "Cool." COMEDY: Just enough humor to keep it fairly light and fun.

Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Below Average ...National Treasure could be headed for box office gold. It's too bad it's missing the gems that make movies worthwhile: intelligence, character development, and a legitimate storyline. National Treasure deserves to be buried.
Roger EbertFull Review Average 'National Treasure' is so silly that the Monty Python version could use the same screenplay, line for line.

OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
We collected 322 moviegoer opinions. OUTSTANDING OPINIONS! It's every bit as good as you expect (hope) it will be. I know I had high expectations and I was very pleased. With nearly three-quarters of the opinions coming in either "Excellent" or "Fantastic," it's certainly a movie I CAN HIGHLY RECOMMEND! And equally important is the lack of any low opinions. It's a movie with very wide appeal. DON'T MISS "NATIONAL TREASURE"!
The brilliant Benjamin Franklin Gates (Nicolas Cage) is a third generation treasure hunter. All his life, Gates has been searching for a treasure no
one believed existed: amassed through the ages, moved across continents, to become
the greatest treasure the world has ever known. Hidden by our Founding Fathers, they
left clues to the Treasure's location right before our eyes … from our nation's birthplace,
to the nation's capitol, to clues buried within the symbols on the dollar bill.
Gates' life-long journey leads him to the last place anyone thought to look: a map
hidden on the back of the Declaration of Independence.
But what he thought was the final clue is only the beginning.
Gates realizes in order to protect the world's greatest treasure, he must now do the
unthinkable: steal the most revered, best guarded document in American history before
it falls into the wrong hands.
In a race against time, Gates must elude the authorities, stay one step ahead of his
ruthless adversary (Sean Bean), decipher the remaining clues and unlock the 2000
year-old mystery behind our greatest national treasure.
