Abandoned at an early age, Oliver Twist is forced to live in a workhouse lorded over by the awful Mr. Bumble, who cheats the boys of their meager rations. Desperate yet determined, Oliver makes his escape to the streets of London. Penniless and alone, he is lured into a world of crime by the sinister Fagin - the mastermind of a gang of pint-sized pickpockets. Oliver's rescue by the kindly Mr. Brownlow is only the beginning of a series of adventures that lead him to the promise of a better life.

Critic's Review Heading
Good

The above rating is an average of the critic reviews below.

Berardinelli, Internet Critic Full Review
Above Average Technically sound and surprisingly faithful to its source material, Roman Polanski's version of Oliver Twist comes across as uninspired and flat.

Roger Ebert Full Review
Very Good Polanski's film is visually exact and detailed without being too picturesque. This is not Ye Olde London, but Ye Harrowing London, teeming with life and dispute. The performances are more vivid and edgy than we might suspect; Kingsley's Fagin is infinitely more complex than in the usual versions.

OPINION OVERVIEW
The following is the original "What's Worth Watching" write-up for this movie.

Moviegoer Opinions:

We collected 57 moviegoer opinions. Approximately three-quarters of the adults, both male and female, enjoyed "Oliver Twist" very much. The remaining ones rated it as average. I have no problem recommending a movie with these opinions, but I wouldn't say that I highly recommend it.

For the teen and twentysomething females I have no problem highly recommending "Oliver Twist." They had many more very high opinions and fewer average opinions.
