Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Above Average Technically sound and surprisingly faithful to its source material, Roman Polanski's version of Oliver Twist comes across as uninspired and flat.
Roger EbertFull Review Very Good Polanski's film is visually exact and detailed without being too picturesque. This is not Ye Olde London, but Ye Harrowing London, teeming with life and dispute. The performances are more vivid and edgy than we might suspect; Kingsley's Fagin is infinitely more complex than in the usual versions.

OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
We collected 57 moviegoer opinions. Approximately three-quarters of the adults, both male and female, enjoyed "Oliver Twist" very much. The remaining ones rated it as average. I have no problem recommending a movie with these opinions, but I wouldn't say that I highly recommend it.
For the teen and twentysomething females I have no problem highly recommending "Oliver Twist." They had many more very high opinions and fewer average opinions.
