Drama - This is a long, fact-based crime drama that isn't the action-oriented
film that some are expecting though there is a fair amount of
violence. This is one mainly for fans of the two main stars, Denzel
Washington and Russell Crowe as the supporting players generally get
a small amunt of screen time.
PROFANITY: Over 30 F-words, 23 S-words, 6 GD's, a number of others. SEX/NUDITY: Brief sex with related nudity; nonsexual nudity. VIOLENCE: Bloody shootings; fights. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Alcohol, tobacco, heroin, cocaine. ACTION: Gunplay, chases, explosions. COMEDY: None.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Good American Gangster is compelling in the same way that many mob-related motion pictures are compelling, but it fails to achieve the greatness that the best of them attain.
Roger EbertFull Review Excellent This is an engrossing story, told smoothly and well, and Russell Crowe's contribution is enormous...
USA TodayFull Review Very Good The movie, based on a true story, takes surprising twists and turns right up to its chilling ending and is probably the best gangster crime drama of the year.

OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
Based on a theater exit polling of 208 moviegoers:
TEENS:Only a small percentage of the males rated it somewhat low but over half rated it extremely high. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! The ladies rated it more in the above average to below average range, which isn't great, but it's not bad, especially considering this is more of a guys movie. Recommended if you're seeing it with your fella, but it's not a movie for a girls night out.
TWENTYSOMETHINGS:The male and female reviews are close to the same and they're quite high. About three-quarters of the guys really enjoyed it and most of the remaining ones rated it Good/Average, which is decent. The female reviews are actually slightly better. Only a few of them rated it below "Very Good." Easily Recommended for both males and females.
ADULTS:Very Good, but not quite great, reviews from both males and females. Close to three-quarters rated it "Very Good," or higher which is great. Unfortunately, most of the remaining quarter rated it only "Good," which isn't bad, but it indicates an average movie. Since virtually no one disliked "American Gangster" I have no problem recommending it.
Nobody used to notice Frank Lucas (Oscar® winner Washington), the quiet driver to one of the inner city's leading black crime bosses. But when his boss suddenly dies, Frank exploits the opening in the power structure to build his own empire and create his own version of the American Dream. Through ingenuity and a strict business ethic, he comes to rule the inner-city drug trade, flooding the streets with a purer product at a better price. Lucas outplays all of the leading crime syndicates and becomes not only one of the city's mainline corrupters, but part of its circle of legit civic superstars.
Richie Roberts (Oscar® winner Crowe) is an outcast cop close enough to the streets to feel a shift of control in the drug underworld. Roberts believes someone is climbing the rungs above the known Mafia families and starts to suspect that a black power player has come from nowhere to dominate the scene. Both Lucas and Roberts share a rigorous ethical code that sets them apart from their own colleagues, making them lone figures on opposite sides of the law. The destinies of these two men will become intertwined as they approach a confrontation where only one of them can come out on top.
