Jackie Moon, a one-hit wonder who used the profits from the success of his chart-topping song “Love Me Sexy” to achieve his dream of owning a basketball team. But Moon’s franchise, the Flint Michigan Tropics, is the worst team in the league and in danger of folding when the ABA announces its plans to merge with the NBA. If they want to survive, Jackie and the Tropics must now do the seemingly impossible – win.
Comedy - This is another silly sports comedy from Will Ferrell aimed at the
young adult male audience, but this time there are more sex-related
gags and harsher language--hence the R rating. Outkast fans may be
disappointed by Andre Benjamin's fairly limited screen time.
PROFANITY: 19 F-words, 25 S-words, 6 GD's, a number of others. SEX/NUDITY: Brief sex without nudity. VIOLENCE: Comic hits and fights. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Alcohol and tobacco. ACTION: Basketball, chases, fights. COMEDY: Silly slapstick; wisecracks; some raunchiness.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Average This movie struggles for laughs, in part because the writing is lazy with too much of the humor being obvious and easily telegraphed, and in part because Semi-Pro is obsessed with being a sports film rather than merely parodying one.
USA TodayFull Review Above Average Although not exactly a slam dunk, Semi-Pro is definitely more than semi-funny.

OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
Based on a theater exit polling of 76 moviegoers:
TEENS:As expected, teen males are the main ones who enjoyed "Semi-Pro." Over half loved it, but quite a few were somewhat disappointed and only rated it "Fair." The female reviews show that just over half truly enjoyed this movie. Unfortunately, the remaining reviews are pretty low. Only recommended for big fans of Will Ferrell.
TWENTYSOMETHINGS:About half of the male and female reviews are great and half are disappointing. This makes it very difficult to make any sort of recommendation either way since some of you will enjoy it and some of you won't.
ADULTS:The females actually enjoyed this movie slightly more than the males. Unfortunately that's not saying much since these reviews aren't very good. Only around a quarter of the males and a third of the females truly enjoyed "Semi-Pro." A very large percentage of the reviews are below average or even lower. Not Recommended!
In the early 1970s, there were two basketball leagues in America - while the NBA ruled the sport, the ABA was defined by its outlaw flair and sensational showmanship. Jackie
Moon (Will Ferrell) is the one-hit singing sensation behind "Love Me Sexy," who relishes his role as owner, coach and power forward for the fictional Flint, Michigan Tropics of the ABA.
But when the NBA announces a plan to merge with the ABA and only take with them the four teams with the best records, disbanding the rest of the ABA squads forever, Moon, assisted by former NBA benchwarmer Monix (Woody Harrelson) and flamboyant Clarence "Downtown" Withers (André Benjamin), decides to rally his motley team for an unlikely eleventh-hour pursuit of acceptance and glory.
