Notes:
New York City subway dispatcher Walter Garber's ordinary day is thrown into chaos by an audacious crime: the hijacking of a subway train. Ryder, the criminal mastermind who, as leader of a highly-armed gang of four, threatens to execute the train’s passengers unless a large ransom is paid within one hour. As the tension mounts beneath his feet, Garber employs his vast knowledge of the subway system in a battle to outwit Ryder and save the hostages. But there’s one riddle Garber can't solve: even if the thieves get the money, how can they possibly escape?

Action Thriller - This remake of the 1974 film is a lot bigger, louder, and more
action-oriented than the original, but it is still talkier than most
summer films and more of a drama than an action film--and hence
has a bit of an older appeal. Strong language and violence make the
film inappropriate for children.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Good By allowing the movie to unfold in real time, Scott enhances the level of suspense, but the masterstroke that differentiates this The Taking of Pelham 123 from its predecessors is the decision to transform the interaction between Walter and Ryder from a hostage negotiation to a chess game.
Roger EbertFull Review Above Average There’s not much wrong with Tony Scott’s “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3,” except that there’s not much really right about it.
USA TodayFull Review Good The new Pelham takes the chilling original premise and modifies it for an era steeped in technology, making for an energetic and engrossing adaptation.
NewsdayFull Review Average Kind of like Grand Central at rush hour: loud, overcrowded and tiring.
