Action Sci-Fi - While this is a film about superheroes, and all the commercials play
up the action scenes in the film, like the comic on which it is
based, this is more of a talky drama about superheroes than a
straightforward action-adventure, and this is most definitely
not for kids due to graphic violence, sex, nudity, and harsh
language. The film also clocks in at 2 hours and 40 minutes and has
only a few action sequences and is rather dark and downbeat.
PROFANITY: 19 F-words, 6 S-words, 12 GD's, a number of others SEX/NUDITY: Sex with related nudity; frequent non-sexual full male nudity. VIOLENCE: Numerous bloody, gory killings. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Acohol and tobacco use. ACTION: Fights and explosions. COMEDY: Some dark humor and sex humor.
OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
Based on a theater exit polling of 73 moviegoers:
TEENS:Great reviews from the guys. Almost all of them rated "Watchman" extremely high. Highly Recommended! The four female reviews are very mixed. Two enjoyed it and two didn't.
TWENTYSOMETHINGS:For a movie targeted at this age group of males, these reviews are disappointing. Only slightly more than half the males truly enjoyed "Watchman." Most of the rest rated it as average or lower. The four female reviews are not very good at all. Only one of them actually enjoyed it.
ADULTS:Very disappointing reviews from the adults. The males enjoyed it slightly more than the females but neither of them enjoyed it enough to recommend it. If you're curious and must see it, I would recommend a lower priced matinee.
Set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the "Doomsday Clock" - which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union - is set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed-up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion - a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers - Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity...but who is watching the Watchmen?
