An uptight, overeducated young man's lowly new "career" leads to the wildest ride of his life - a journey through puking kids, angst-filled co-workers and a dizzy-making romantic triangle -- all the way to facing his own future with guts and optimism.
Drama - This is a comedy centering on young adult characters and hence that
is the target, but the 1987 period setting gives it appeal to older
viewers who grew up at the time. Fans of Kristen Stewart may be
disappointed by her supporting role here. Language plus sexual and
drug references make the film inappropriate for children.

Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Very Good Greg Mottola, whose Superbad exhibited some of this behavior (particularly in the scenes with "McLovin'" and the two cops) has taken a leap of faith with Adventureland. The result is a sharp, insightful, charming motion picture.
Roger EbertFull Review Good ...Together, and with the others, they make "Adventureland” more real and more touching than it may sound.
USA TodayFull Review Above Average Adventureland is a bittersweet, if uneven, coming-of-age comedy that captures the notion of a pivotal summer.

OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
Based on a theater exit polling of 56 moviegoers:
TEENS:The males and females rated it about the same. Just over half enjoyed "Adventureland" very much. Nearly all the rest rated it as "Good/Average," which is decent. Recommended, but not highly.
TWENTYSOMETHINGS:Six of the seven males loved "Adventureland." One of the females loved it and the other one rated it average.
ADULTS:These are pretty disappointing adult reviews, but this really isn't a movie targeted at adults. Only a very small percentage of the reviews are really high. Most rated it above average to average. Quite a few rating it even lower. Not recommended.
A funky, self-professedly "funtastic" Pennsylvania amusement park, Adventureland
appears to be the bane of recent college graduate's James Brennan's (Jesse Eisenberg)
existence. He previously had big plans to spend the summer on a life-altering trek through
Europe that would initiate him into real adult life. But when his family suffers an economic
downturn in the middle of the Reagan 80s, James' only summer trip is straight to a minimum
wage job manning a game booth so existentially bankrupt, no one is even allowed to win the
giant-ass stuffed panda.
Yet Adventureland isn't quite what it seems on the surface. For behind the cloying cotton
candy aroma, the grating disco songs and the near-pathological customers, there's a whole other
world of misfit friends, hidden dreams and most incredibly, after-work encounters with the
alluringly sharp-tongued arcade girl, Em Lewin (Kristen Stewart). And when James discovers the
hard-won courage to go to battle for Em, the result is a savagely funny yet sweetly heart-felt and
unexpected encounter with "real adult life."
