19-year-old Alice returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat and, of course, the Mad Hatter. Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and end the Red Queen's reign of terror.
Adventure Fantasy - This effects-heavy fantasy is neither an adaptation of the Lewis
Carroll novels nor the classic Disney animated feature but a
completely original story using the familiar characters from those
previous works, all done with the usual dark and twisted approach
of director Tim Burton. Despite his prominence in the ad campaign,
Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter is definitely a supporting character.
Some dark and strange touches may be too intense for young
children, especially in 3D.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Very Good Burton has crafted something all-new for this generation, and has done a solid job with his re-imagining. It's a workmanlike effort that will enchant all but the youngest children while holding the interest of parents. That, by definition, makes for a worthwhile family outing.
Roger EbertFull Review Good The film is enchanting in its mordant way until, unfortunately, it arrives at its third act. Here I must apologize to faithful readers for repeating myself. Time after time I complain when a film develops an intriguing story and then dissolves it in routine and boring action.
USA TodayFull Review Excellent Director Tim Burton has reimagined Lewis Carroll's classic tale in a way that might put some purists off. But the story he presents, with a more empowered 19-year-old Alice, is engaging and amusing. The visual landscape in which she travels is awash in color, magic and splendor.
