Family services social worker Emily Jenkins thinks she has seen it all... until she meets 10-year old Lilith Sullivan and the child's cruel and dangerous parents. Her worst fears are confirmed when the parents try to harm Lily, their only daughter. Frightened for her life, Emily enlists the help of Detective Mike Barron and takes Lily in while she continues the search for the perfect foster family. Just as it seems as though Lily is on her way to a more loving home, under the guidance of Emily and psychiatris, dark forces surrounding this young girl come to light and, little do they know, their attempts to protect her will only bring on greater horror.
Horror Mystery Thriller - This is a thriller aimed at an adult audience, in particular
Fans of co-star Bradley Cooper will be disappointed by his fairly
limited screen time. Although there is a pre-teen girl in a lead
role, this film is much too violent and intense for kids.
OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
Based on a theater exit polling of 38 moviegoers:
TEENS:One teen loved it and three enjoyed it very much. One hated it.
TWENTYSOMETHINGS:The males and most of the females enjoyed "Case 39" very much. One female rated it average, which is a bit low, but certainly not bad.
ADULTS:Very mixed reviews, especially from the males. About half the males enjoyed "Case 39" very much, but a good third were somewhat to very disappointed. The female reviews are also mixed but not as bad as the males. Most females enjoyed "Case 39" very much or loved it. About 25% were somewhat disappointed, rating it below average and poor.
Devoted family services specialist Emily Jenkins (Academy Award®
winner Renee Zellweger) has seen it all - lies, neglect, abuse - domestic
of every type. That is, until she takes on Case 39: the case of 10-year-old
Sullivan (Jodelle Ferland), whose eerie, secretive family leaves Emily shaken
disturbed. When Lillith's parents attempt to harm their only child in a
ritual, Emily intervenes. Heartbroken by Lillith's loneliness and innocence,
Emily decides to do something she has never allowed herself to do in the past:
get personally involved. Hoping to do the right thing for the withdrawn girl,
Emily offers Lillith a caring, happy home until she can find an adoptive family.
That's when the real terror begins.
What pushed Lillith's family to the breaking point? Why does everyone who
comes into contact with Lillith seem to suddenly become mad? And how will Emily
survive the devastating secret fears that have come to the fore? To discover the
Emily must leave behind her rational beliefs and confront her most terrifying
nightmares as she enters a supernatural realm where evil preys on humanity.
