Veterinary school student Jacob meets and falls in love with Marlena, a star performer in a circus of a bygone era. They discover beauty amidst the world of the Big Top, and come together through their compassion for a special elephant. Against all odds -- including the wrath of Marlena's charismatic but dangerous husband, August -- Jacob and Marlena find life...
Drama - This is a period romantic drama that will have more young adult
appeal than most due to the presence of stars Robert Pattinson and
Reese Witherspoon. Fans of the three stars Pattinson, Witherspoon,
and Christoph Waltz will have plenty to savor here. Females are the
target audience. Some violent content, especially against animals,
make this too intense for young children.
PROFANITY: 2 S-words, 2 GD's, a few others. SEX/NUDITY: Brief sensuality without nudity. VIOLENCE: Beatings with people and animals. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Alcohol and tobacco. ACTION: Fights. COMEDY: Animal humor.
Roger EbertFull Review Good This is good sound family entertainment, a safe PG-13 but not a dumb one, and it's a refreshing interlude before we hurtle into the summer blockbuster season.
USA TodayFull Review Above Average This old-fashioned melodrama about a romance set amid the big top is mildly entertaining, though the best performances come not from the stars, but the supporting players.
Washington PostFull Review Above Average Prepare to be amazed by Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz! See them interact with an actual elephant!) It is also undeniably effective entertainment.
