An impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's, the film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father. Jack finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick's signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.
Drama Fantasy - Like all of director Terrence Malick's films, this is a slow and very arty drama, and the film is maybe even more divisive due to his use of surrealism and forays into space and the dinosaur era. Brad Pitt fans may enjoy his heavy dramatic role but those who enjoy his more mainstream role will have a hard time embracing this film. Sean Penn's screen time is limited. The film is too slow, deep, and odd for kids, who wouldn't be interested anyhow.
