Mavis Gary is a writer of teen literature who returns to her small hometown to relive her glory days and attempt to reclaim her happily married high school sweetheart. When returning home proves more difficult than she thought, Mavis forms an unusual bond with a former classmate who hasn't quite gotten over high school, either.
Comedy Drama - This dark comedy-drama is a big showcase for star Charlize Theron. Language and adult subject matter make the film inappropriate for children.

Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Above Average There are isolated instances when Young Adult strikes the right comedic and dramatic notes, making a cogent point or delivering a solid laugh, but it's mostly a string of out-of-tune chords.
Roger EbertFull Review Very Good The character of Mavis makes "Young Adult" tricky to process. As I absorbed it, I realized what a fearless character study it is. That sometimes it's funny doesn't hurt.
USA TodayFull Review Above Average Young Adult has the snark but not the upbeat resolution of 2007's Juno, screenwriter Cody and director Jason Reitman's last joint effort. While on sardonic turf, it's scathingly funny. Then it veers from biting wit to pitiful. At one juncture, the story threatens to spin off into Fatal Attraction territory.

OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
Based on a theater exit polling of 45 moviegoers:
Very disappointing reviews! This is one of those movies where all the critics love it but moviegoers certainly don't. A very small percentage of the males and females really enjoyed "Young Adults." Most rated it below average or poor. Reviews this low from such a large percent of the total indicates a movie that few will enjoy. Charlize Theron's acting is great but the story is simply too sad and depressing for most moviegoers.
