After two boys duke it out on a playground, the parents of the "victim" invite the parents of the "bully" over to work out their issues. A polite discussion of childrearing soon escalates into verbal warfare, with all four parents revealing their true colors. None of them will escape the carnage.
Comedy Drama - This is a talky, single location, four-character dark comedy based on
an award-winning play. Fans of the four stars will enjoy this big
showcase for them, but those looking for less talk, more action, and
broader comedy will be disappointed. Language makes the film
inappropriate for children, who wouldn't be interested anyhow.
PROFANITY: 13 F-words; 21 S-words; 2 GD's; a number of others. SEX/NUDITY: None. VIOLENCE: A boy hits another with a stick. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Alcohol and tobacco. ACTION: None. COMEDY: Darkly comic dialogue; vomit humor.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Above Average It's an indicator of Polanski's reputation in the business that he was able to attract a cast of this magnitude for a movie with limited appeal (they presumably worked for scale). In some ways, Carnage feels more like an experiment than a full feature. Carnage makes for an interesting diversion. As a full admission motion picture, however, it's not entirely successful.
USA TodayFull Review Above Average Despite their well-appointed meeting place and seemingly good intentions, the bourgeoisie characters in Carnage are anything but discreet or charming. In fact, they're nasty, irritating and downright miserable.
