Armando Alvarez has lived and worked on his father's ranch in Mexico his entire life. As the ranch encounters financial difficulties, Armando's younger brother Raul, shows up with his new fiancé, Sonia. It seems that Raul's success as an international businessman means the ranch's troubles are over as he pledges to settle all debts his father has incurred. But when Armando falls for Sonia, and Raul's business dealings turn out to be less than legit, all hell breaks loose as they find themselves in a war with Mexico's most feared drug lord, the mighty Onza.
Comedy - Like most other Will Ferrell films, this is a silly comedy, but the twist here is that it is entirely in Spanish, and all cast members including Ferrell are subtitled. Those familiar with telenovelas and Latin melodramas will especially get this genre spoof but it isn't necessary. Language and sexual content make the film inappropriate for kids.
PROFANITY: 18 F-words; 11 S-words; 1 GD; a few others. SEX/NUDITY: A comic sex scene with related nudity. VIOLENCE: Shootings with blood. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Alcohol, tobacco, cocaine. ACTION: A big scene of gunplay. COMEDY: Silly wisecracks, banter, sight gags, sometimes suggestive.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Good It's a funny movie, although rarely is the humor of the loud, obnoxious kind we have come to associate with Ferrell.
Roger EbertFull Review Average it's fitfully amusing and I have the sense that Spanish-speaking audiences will like it more than I did, although whether they'll be laughing with it or at it, I cannot say.
USA TodayFull Review Good This very funny spoof of telenovelas and classic Mexican westerns is decidedly offbeat and absurdly daffy.
