Movie Type (Genre) Heading
Action Drama Sci-Fi - Although based on an incredibly popular young adult novel, the premise of this science fiction action drama is very dark and brutal, centering on a contest where kids must kill kids. The film is rated PG-13 and as such the violence is not overly graphic, but the film is still much too intense and dark for young children. Fans of young stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will have plenty to savor here while older stars such as Woody Harrelson and Elizabeth Banks have smaller but still colorful roles.

Critic's Review Heading

Berardinelli, Internet Critic Full Review
Good This is sophisticated entertainment with a broad-based appeal.

Roger Ebert Full Review
Good 'The Hunger Games' is an effective entertainment, and Jennifer Lawrence is strong and convincing in the central role.

USA Today Full Review
Good The action is brisk, the acting is solid, and barring an unlikely failure at the box office, a franchise is born. Let the games begin.

OPINION OVERVIEW
The following is the original "What's Worth Watching" write-up for this movie.

Moviegoer Opinions:

Based on a theater exit polling of 208 moviegoers:
TEENS:Fantastic Reviews! Nearly all the males and females rated "Hunger Games" extremely high. As is typical with teen reviews, there is nearly always a small percentage who rate the movie very low. I wouldn't pay much attention to these since they are so different than the other reviews.
TWENTYSOMETHINGS:Great Reviews from both the males and females. No one rated it even a little bit low and most loved it.
ADULTS:This movie is targeted more towards the younger crowd but most adults enjoyed it very much with more than half indicating they loved it. Only a small percentage rated it as low as below average.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE
Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which "Tributes" must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she's ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
