Movie Type (Genre) Heading
Action Thriller - Like the 1990 film it's based on, this is a science fiction action thriller, but the violence and effects aren't nearly as bloody and grotesque as that film. But despite the PG-13 rating, this is still a fairly violent (though bloodless) film with a lot of profanity (though the words used are less harsh), so parents should be on alert. Fans of stars Colin Farrell and Kate Beckinsale should enjoy though Jessica Biel's screen time and role are comparatively limited.

Critic's Review Heading

Berardinelli, Internet Critic Full Review
Average His grim world, although highly derivative of other dark, futuristic science fiction enterprises (Blade Runner and The Fifth Element come to mind), is vividly represented via some of the most effectively splashy CGI I have recently seen.

Roger Ebert Full Review
Good 'Total Recall' is well-crafted, high energy sci-fi. Like all stories inspired by Philip K. Dick, it deals with intriguing ideas.

USA Today Full Review
Average Soulless, bombastic and numbingly repetitive, Total Recall is easy to forget within a few hours of watching.

OPINION OVERVIEW
The following is the original "What's Worth Watching" write-up for this movie.

Moviegoer Opinions:

Based on a theater exit polling of 74 moviegoers:
TEENS:There weren't very many male reviews and they aren't very high considering the type of movie this is. Less than half truly enjoyed "Total Recall." Fortunately, the older male reviews came in very high so these few reviews aren't very accurate. The female reviews are actually quite a bit better. Close to two-thirds enjoyed it very much.
TWENTYSOMETHINGS:Two-thirds of the males loved "Total Recall." The other thirds enjoyed it very much. Three of the four females enjoyed "Total Recall" very much with the fourth one rating it average.
ADULTS:Half the males rated it very high indicating they loved it. Most of the rest rated it above average, which indicates a movie they enjoyed very much. Only a few were slightly disappointed. The female reviews are very similar. Slightly fewer loved it with more rating it above average. Overall these reviews are very good but not quite great, but close.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE
Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he's got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life - real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police - controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world - Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.
