Notes:
The haunted Captain of a Soviet submarine holds the fate of the world in his hands. Forced to leave his family behind, he is charged with leading a covert mission cloaked in mystery.

War Thriller - This is a Cold War-set submarine thriller, meaning all that
implies: a
small cast virtually devoid of any women and a limited setting.
Although about Russian characters, all actors speak with their
natural
American accents, which may be distracting for some. Fans of Ed
Harris and David Duchovny should enjoy, especially those of the
latter, who has a change of pace role. Violence and some language
make the film inappropriate for kids, who would not be interested
for
the most part anyhow due to the talkiness.
PROFANITY: 1 F-word; 7 S-words; 1 GD; a few others. SEX/NUDITY: None VIOLENCE: Shootings, fighting, killing with some blood. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Some tobacco and frequent alcohol. ACTION: Underwater combat and gunplay. COMEDY: None
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Good When it comes to white-knuckle suspense and edge-of-the-seat heart palpitations, Phantom doesn't come close to Das Boot. But, although its factual basis may be deeply flawed, the movie is well constructed and the workmanlike execution held my attention.
Roger EbertFull Review Average The ending is a howler, provoking uneasy chuckles when we're supposed to be feeling chills and maybe a tear or two. Whatever really happened with that sub in 1968, we can be reasonably sure this wasn't it.
Washington PostFull Review Average "Phantom" isn't a cinematic masterpiece, but it tells an utterly fascinating story that turns America-first patriotism on its head. For a generation raised on Cold War paranoia, it will take some adjusting to root for the bad guy, who, in the course of faithfully serving a country not our own, just might have saved the world.
NY PostFull Review Average Robinson generates a fair amount of suspense in "Phantom,'' which may be on the talky side but has nicely appointed sets representing the aging sub's interiors. The beyond-hokey final sequence would sink a lesser film, but Captain Harris keeps it afloat. I salute the comrade's sheer professionalism.

OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
Moviegoer Opinions:
This movie didn't bring in much of an audience. From several showing opening weekend, we were only able to collect twenty or so reviews. (This movie only played one weekend at local theaters.) A few moviegoers really enjoyed "Phantom" but most of the reviews were in the average to below average range.
