A fine art auctioneer mixed up with an underworld gang joins forces with a charismatic hypnotherapist to recover a lost painting. As boundaries between desire, reality and hypnotic suggestion begin to blur the stakes rise faster and more dangerously than any of the players could have anticipated.
Thriller - This is a twisty, twisted psychological thriller with some science
fiction overtones. This film definitely requires full attention as
its shifts between fantasy and reality could be confusing. Violent
and sexual content as well as language make the film inappropriate
for kids. Fans of the three stars should very much enjoy.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Above Average "Trance" is an intriguing movie and worth seeing for those who appreciate films that (mess) with the viewer's mind. The movie has limited mainstream appeal and its lack of character definition left me feeling as if the glass was half-empty.
Roger EbertFull Review Good ...if you can look past the sputtering conclusion — or the pseudo-intellectual banter about memory, modern art, and other assorted nonsense — what you'll find is a brisk, breezy, style-heavy crime flick that happens to be one of the most purely entertaining movies Boyle has made in a long time.
USA TodayFull Review Above Average ...the dazzling style of this labyrinthine psychological thriller makes the viewer long for more substance. The film descends into extreme and seemingly gratuitous violence, rendering this hallucinatory heist thriller more off-putting than mesmerizing.
NY PostFull Review Very Good This exhilarating brain-twister is a nonstop visual, aural and intellectual delight, steeped in movie conventions and yet fizzing with freshness. It's what happens when film noir goes out to a rave.
