Sci-Fi Action Adventure - This is a science fiction adventure film, but one more oriented to
drama and ideas than fast paced action. While the film has a very
small cast, it is mostly a showcase for star Tom Cruise and female
co-stars Andrea Riseborough and Olga Kurylenko; while prominently
featured in the publicity, Morgan Freeman's role is fairly small and
doesn't emerge until fairly late. Adult themes, violence, and mild
sensuality make this not one for young children.
PROFANITY: 1 F-word; 4 S-words; 3 Gd's; a few others. SEX/NUDITY: Brief non-sexual nudity; mild sensuality. VIOLENCE: Some fighting with some blood. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Some tobacco. ACTION: Fighting, chases, destruction. COMEDY: Some cute kid humor.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Good Despite being tarted up with enough action to stave off boredom for inattentive viewers, Oblivion is still more of a "true" sci-fi offering than 90% of what Hollywood passes off as such.
Roger EbertFull Review Average "Oblivion" is a special effects extravaganza with a lot of blatant symbolism and very little meaning. It starts slow, turns dull and then becomes tedious — which makes it a marginal improvement over the earlier film. It features shiny surfaces, clicky machinery and no recognizable human behavior. It's equally ambitious and gormless.
USA TodayFull Review Above Average Oblivion is a slick spectacle...But with the film focusing squarely on style, substance falls by the post-apocalyptic wayside. Director Joseph Kosinski focuses on cool visuals but stints on a compelling plot. It's a dazzler, but the story lacks the impact of the futuristic look.
Washington PostFull Review Above Average It's an engrossing, if complicated and twisty, story, with plentiful sci-fi action and a provocative subtext about the nature of the human soul. At times, however, the balance between those two things feels off. Some of the fight sequences, which involve robotic flying "drones" mounted with guns, go on a bit longer than is strictly necessary.
