Movie Type (Genre) Heading
Sci-Fi Action Adventure - This is a science fiction adventure film, but one more oriented to drama and ideas than fast paced action. While the film has a very small cast, it is mostly a showcase for star Tom Cruise and female co-stars Andrea Riseborough and Olga Kurylenko; while prominently featured in the publicity, Morgan Freeman's role is fairly small and doesn't emerge until fairly late. Adult themes, violence, and mild sensuality make this not one for young children.

Critic's Review Heading

Berardinelli, Internet Critic Full Review
Good Despite being tarted up with enough action to stave off boredom for inattentive viewers, Oblivion is still more of a "true" sci-fi offering than 90% of what Hollywood passes off as such.

Roger Ebert Full Review
Average "Oblivion" is a special effects extravaganza with a lot of blatant symbolism and very little meaning. It starts slow, turns dull and then becomes tedious — which makes it a marginal improvement over the earlier film. It features shiny surfaces, clicky machinery and no recognizable human behavior. It's equally ambitious and gormless.

USA Today Full Review
Above Average Oblivion is a slick spectacle...But with the film focusing squarely on style, substance falls by the post-apocalyptic wayside. Director Joseph Kosinski focuses on cool visuals but stints on a compelling plot. It's a dazzler, but the story lacks the impact of the futuristic look.

Entertainment Weekly Full Review
Above Average It's an engrossing, if complicated and twisty, story, with plentiful sci-fi action and a provocative subtext about the nature of the human soul. At times, however, the balance between those two things feels off. Some of the fight sequences, which involve robotic flying "drones" mounted with guns, go on a bit longer than is strictly necessary.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE
2077: Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) serves as a security repairmen stationed on an evacuated Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying alien threat who still scavenges what's left of our planet, Jack's mission is almost complete. In a matter of two weeks, he will join the remaining survivors on a lunar colony far from the war-torn world he has long called home.

Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, Jack's soaring existence is brought crashing down after he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Drawn to Jack through a connection that transcends logic, her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he thought he knew. With a reality that is shattered as he discovers shocking truths that connect him to Earth of the past, Jack will be pushed to a heroism he didn't know he contained within. The fate of humanity now rests solely in the hands of a man who believed our world was soon to be lost forever.
