Comedy Fantasy - Like the first film, this is a hybrid animation/live action comedy aimed at the whole family, primarily children, based on the long-running Saturday morning cartoon. There is a brief moment of crude humor, but on the whole this is clean and safe viewing for kids of all ages.

Critic's Review Heading

Roger Ebert Full Review
Very Poor After all, the film's big take-away message is at least partially noble: "love is [not] conditional." Any parent that goes to see "The Smurfs 2" is essentially teaching their children that lesson by example.

USA Today Full Review
Very Poor This insipid, and sometimes awkward, blend of animation, computer generation and live action wastes a ton of talent and lacks a true sense of whimsy

NY Post Full Review
Poor Carrying on with the legacy of inanity, "The Smurfs 2" stumbles from one dumb pratfall to the next...

OPINION OVERVIEW
The following is the original "What's Worth Watching" write-up for this movie.

Moviegoer Opinions:

Based on a theater exit polling of 20 moviegoers:
Unfortunately on movies targeted at small children, we aren't able to collect very many reviews. Parents are usually too busy taking care of their small children to fill out a review.
CHILDREN:All the children loved "The Smurfs 2."
TEENS:The two females loved it.
TWENTYSOMETHINGS:The one female loved "The Smurfs 2."
ADULTS:The two ladies loved it as did two of the four males. The third male enjoyed it very much and the last one rated it average, which for this type of movie is a high review. These limited reviews clearly show that this kids movie is one the entire family will enjoy.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE
In this sequel to Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation's hybrid live action/animated family blockbuster comedy The Smurfs , the evil wizard Gargamel creates a couple of mischievous Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties that he hopes will let him harness the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence. But when he discovers that only a real Smurf can give him what he wants, and only a secret spell that Smurfette knows can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs, Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and brings her to Paris, where he has been winning the adoration of millions as the world's greatest sorcerer. It's up to Papa, Clumsy, Grouchy, and Vanity to return to our time, reunite with their human friends Patrick and Grace Winslow, and rescue her! Will Smurfette, who has always felt different from the other Smurfs, find a new connection with the Naughties Vexy and Hackus -- or will the Smurfs convince her that their love for her is True Blue?
