After 9/11 and a tour of duty in Afghanistan which scarred him forever, Jack Ryan lands in the Financial Intelligence Unit of the modern CIA where he becomes an analyst, under the guardianship of his handler, Harper. When Ryan believes he's uncovered a Russian plot to collapse the United States economy, he goes from being an analyst to becoming a spy and must fight to save his own life and those of countless others, while also trying to protect the thing that's more important to him than anything, his relationship with his fiancee Cathy.
Action - This fifth film based on the popular Tom Clancy spy novel series is a
reboot/origin story with a bit more action than the previous films.
Fans of all of the stars should enjoy. Like previous films in the
series, this skews somewhat older than most action films, even in
this case with a younger lead cast. Language and violence make the
film too intense for young children.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Good This is summer blockbuster quality entertainment delivered in the dead of winter - a most welcome development.
Roger EbertFull Review Good But then something interesting (and pretty rare) happens: the movie finds its feet, and unrolls as a pretty suspenseful, largely engaging, and hardly ever too-over-the-top spy thriller.
USA TodayFull Review Above Average Still, Pine seems a good fit for the role and Knightley does her best to enliven a rather lackluster part. Unfortunately, the script they work from is full of plot holes and implausibilities.
