An unlikely World War II platoon is tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys - seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 -- possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind's greatest achievements.
Action Drama - Despite the cast filled with award-nominated and -winning acting
heavyweights, this all-star WWII film based on a true story is very
light and breezy in tone, not to mention there's not a lot in the way
of war action. That said, there is some language and violence that
make the film too strong for young children, not to mention that
there is nonstop cigarette smoking.
PROFANITY: 6 S-words; 5 GD's; a few others. SEX/NUDITY: None. VIOLENCE: Shootings with some blood. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Some alcohol and non-stop tobacco. ACTION: Some gunplay. COMEDY: Banter and wisecracks.
Roger EbertFull Review Above Average This is not a terrible movie. It's just not consistently good enough to get excited about.
USA TodayFull Review Average Despite its intrinsically fascinating subject matter and winning cast, The Monuments Men is no treasure.
NY PostFull Review Good Most important, it's a heartfelt tribute to men who gave up comfortable lives and careers to do what they had to do for posterity under incredibly difficult and dangerous circumstances.
