Throughout the years, there have been marriages, children and divorces among a close-knit group of college friends -- not to mention all the love and heartbreak that accompany a life well lived -- but the group has not been able to manage a proper get-together since Lance and Mia's wedding 15 years ago. But that's all about to be remedied. When the friends finally reunite over the Christmas holidays, they will discover just how easy it is for long-forgotten rivalries and passionate romances to be reignited.
Comedy - Like the first film from 1999, this is an ensemble comedy-drama with
an African-American cast, but also like the first film, it has appeal
beyond any ethnic lines. Fans of the stars and the original film
should enjoy though, in keeping with the 14 years that have passed
between films, it's also a more mature and sentimental film.
Constant language and raunchy humor make the film inappropriate for kids.
PROFANITY: 14 F-words; 19 S-words; 3 GD's; many others. SEX/NUDITY: Brief sex without nudity; brief sexy nude dancing. VIOLENCE: A fight between women; a hit. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Alcohol and some marijuana. ACTION: None. COMEDY: Banter, wisecracks, physical gags, sometimes raunchy.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Above Average Movies about the inevitability of mortality should have a more lasting impact but the crowd-pleasing mentality underpinning The Best Man Holiday guarantees that it's easily forgotten once the end credits roll.
Roger EbertFull Review Very Good The rich, deep quality of his voice, and his sudden statement of fact, turned the lump in my throat to a huge smile on my face. That's how this movie works.
USA TodayFull Review Average Less would have been more in this jam-packed, not-so-jolly holiday. Humor is weighed down by contrivances and sentimentality, though the cast is generally appealing.
Washington PostFull Review Above Average 'The Best Man Holiday' possesses all the strengths and weaknesses of banal, high-gloss mainstream entertainment: It's boringly, bracingly, gratifyingly conventional. No shame in that game.
