After a treacherous warlord kills their master and banishes their kind, 47 leaderless samurai vow to seek vengeance and restore honor to their people. Driven from their homes and dispersed across the land, this band of Ronin must seek the help of Kai -- a half-breed they once rejected -- as they fight their way across a savage world of mythic beasts, shape-shifting witchcraft and wondrous terrors. As this exiled, enslaved outcast becomes their most deadly weapon, he will transform into the hero who inspires this band of outnumbered rebels to seize eternity.
Action Adventure - This is a period samurai action film with some fantasy elements
thrown in, so those looking for a serious treatment of this
historical story upon which it is inspired will not find it here.
Swordfight battles and scary images make the film too intense for
Roger EbertFull Review Poor The action scenes are unimaginatively choreographed and shot, excessively edited, and often out-of-focus, and the script's fantasy elements are lazily strung together.
USA TodayFull Review Average The tale in 47 Ronin has been recounted numerous times in Japanese lore. Now Hollywood has taken it on, tricked it out and done it no favors. While the visuals are lovely to behold, this unremarkable version of the classic 18th century Japanese legend is stiff and uninvolving.
NY PostFull Review Average It all begins to seem like an Asian meditation on Super Mario, as Kai and company must ascend various levels (fire, dragon, bad theater) to rescue the princess. But there's little sense of urgency, or — oddly, given the film's title — of scale. You never really think that the 47 are truly outnumbered, and the large action scenes are often just incomprehensible.
