Storyline Heading
A spelling bee loser sets out to exact revenge by finding a loophole and attempting to win as an adult.
.
Movie Type (Genre) Heading
Comedy - Jason Bateman's directing debut is a dark comedy aimed at adult moviegoers. Fans of him will enjoy this lead showcase, and while the film deals with children's spelling bees and has a major child character, this is dark and crude material strictly not for kids thanks to sexual content and non-stop language.

Critic's Review Heading

Berardinelli, Internet Critic Full Review
Above Average So, although Bad Words can be rightfully described as "funny," it feels more like half a movie than a whole experience.

Entertainment Weekly Full Review
Above Average That being said, Bateman's directorial debut looks great, with smart use of slow motion and shots that are framed to amp up the comedy.
