Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling -- where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.
Crime Drama Thriller - This crime drama is more of a dark,
cynical satire of the TV news
business than it is a more action-
oriented film as some of the
marketing suggests. This is a major
Jake Gyllenhaal showcase, with other
known stars such as Rene Russo and
Bill Paxton having smaller but
important roles. Constant language
and some scenes of bloody violence
make this not for children.
Jake Gyllenhaal ENEMY, PRISONERS, END OF WATCH, SOURCE CODE Rene Russo THOR, YOURS, MINE AND OURS, TWO FOR THE MONEY Bill Paxton EDGE OF TOMORROW, MILLION DOLLAR ARM, 2 GUNS Ann Cusack Director: Dan Gilroy
PROFANITY: Over 30 F-words; 15 S-words; 4 GD's; a few others. SEX/NUDITY: None. VIOLENCE: Bloody shootings; bloody bodies. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Some alcohol. ACTION: Some gunplay and one big car chase. COMEDY: Darkly comic lines and situations, sometimes suggestive.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Good This isn't fun, escapist entertainment but, when it works, it's fascinating and compelling and makes us take a hard look at what TV news is selling and where it's getting the product.
NY PostFull Review Very Good Part of the fascination is wondering just how far down the sewer Gilroy will let his feral antihero descend in 'Nightcrawler.' And will the cameraman will be punished for it? The answer is exhilarating, at least if you have the stomach for it.

OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
Based on a theater exit polling of 36 moviegoers:
This is a movie the critics certainly enjoyed but again the average moviegoer thought otherwise.
TEENS: The three males all loved "Nightcrawler."
TWENTYSOMETHINGS:The lone males loved it but the two females only rated it "average."
ADULTS: Both the male and female reviews are not that good. Just a few indicated that they loved it. There were quite a few who thought it was an "above average" movie, which is a high review. Unfortunately, a very high percentage only rated it "average," or even lower.
