30 years after Ghostbusters took the world by storm, the beloved franchise makes its long-awaited return. Director Paul Feig brings his fresh take to the supernatural comedy, joined by some of the funniest actors working today.
Action Comedy Sci-Fi - This is not a remake nor a sequel of the classic 1984 horror comedy
but a complete restart/reboot with an all-female lead cast. The
gender difference aside, this is very much in line with the property,
offering laughs with effects and some scary bits for most families.
There are some scary moments and images that may be too intense for
very young children, and there is some very mild language, but on the
whole most families with pre-teens
and up will find this to be fairly safe viewing. Fans of the
actresses, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and
especially Kate McKinnon will enjoy.
PROFANITY: 1 S-word; a few others. SEX/NUDITY: None. VIOLENCE: Fights between people and ghosts; no blood. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Some alcohol. ACTION: Chases, fights, explosions, destruction. COMEDY: Silly banter, wisecracks, sight gags, sometimes crude and dark.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Above Average It's fitfully amusing, features decent chemistry among the leads, enjoys two richly comedic performances (from Chris Hemsworth and Kate McKinnon), and is dragged down by an overreliance on special effects and some boring action scenes.
Roger EbertFull Review Average ...genuinely humorous opportunities arrive only sporadically throughout the rest of this experiment that attempts to combine ectoplasm and estrogen into an enjoyable summer comedy elixir.
USA TodayFull Review Good The 1984 Ghostbusters will always be the gold standard, yet the new film is a similarly inviting intro for the next generation of boys and girls. The only boos it deserves are the ones coming from its resident haunts.
NY PostFull Review Good Its girl-power message is not subtle. Overall, though, Paul Feig's reboot of the 1984 classic is a goofy, big-hearted romp. Is it as good? No. Is any remake as good as the original? Almost never (the Coen brothers' "True Grit” notwithstanding).
