Kubo lives a quiet, normal life in a small shoreside village until a spirit from the past turns his life upside down by re-igniting an age-old vendetta. This causes all sorts of havoc as gods and monsters chase Kubo who, in order to survive, must locate a magical suit of armor once worn by his late father, a legendary Samurai warrior.
Animated Adventure Fantasy - While certainly an action adventure for the whole family, this
period-set, stop motion animated film
also deals some dark themes such as death that may be of some concern
to some parents of young kids; some scary images and intense action
scenes may also be of concern. But most parents will find this to be
safe viewing, and fans of voice actors Charlize Theron and Matthew
McConaughey should enjoy.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Very Good ... this is as good as or better than any animated film to reach screens this year. Kubo and the Two Strings is a magical motion picture in every sense of the word.
Roger EbertFull Review Very Good The fact that these two extremely different but equally inspired images can co-exist within the same film—a film that's as poignant for adults as it is entertaining for children—is nothing short of magical.
USA TodayFull Review Very Good It is definitely the summer for talking animals taking over the cinema, but Kubo manages to rise above the rest of its peers with a wondrous coming-of-age tale full of ancient soul.
NY PostFull Review Good Knight's sophisticated stop-motion style puts "Kubo and the Two Strings” head and shoulders above most kids' fare, save Pixar; this is one movie that earns its 3-D surcharge.

OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
Based on a theater exit polling of 39 moviegoers:
CHILDREN: They all loved "Kubo and the Two Strings."
TEENS: Five of the seven males loved it, but the remaining two only rated it "average."
TWENTYSOMETHINGS: All the males and females LOVED "Kubo and the Two Strings."
ADULTS: This is a bit of an odd story and it shows in these reviews. About 45% of the males loved it, but the rest only rated it "average" (enjoyable but nothing special or memorable). The ladies enjoyed it more with just over half indicating they loved it with a few more enjoying it very much. Like with the males, there were quite a few who felt it was only an "average" movie with a few even rating it "below average."
