A story set on the offshore drilling rig Deepwater Horizon, which exploded during April 2010 and created the worst oil spill in U.S. history.
Action Drama Thriller - While rated PG-13, this fact-based disaster drama has frequent
profanity and a lot of non-bloody but intense violence and action, so
parents of young children should be cautioned. Fans of stars Mark
Wahlberg and Gina Rodriguez should enjoy this showcase though other
known stars such as Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, and especially Kate
Hudson may be disappointed by their more limited screen time.
PROFANITY: 1 F-word; well over 30 S-words; 5 GD's; a few others. SEX/NUDITY: None. VIOLENCE: Various injuries from fires and destruction with moderate blood. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Brief alcohol. ACTION: Explosions, fires, destruction. COMEDY: Some banter and kid humor.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Good By focusing on the humanity of the protagonists as well as their heroism, Deepwater Horizon gives us characters who are more like people than icons. That's a crucial element in what makes this particular disaster film work where so many others fail.
Roger EbertFull Review Average "Deepwater Horizon” gets the explosions just right, but it's everything around them—the people, the aftermath, the tragedy—that it misses. That's the more challenging story—the one that places the fire and oil in a context that allows us to see its impact beyond the cost of human life.
USA TodayFull Review Good ...a fiery mix of white-knuckle tension, searing chaos and visceral drama. While Deepwater Horizon effectively shows its mettle as a proper action film, it goes the extra mile and drills a little deeper to unearth a lot of heart as well.
NY PostFull Review Good ... a highly entertaining nautical version of "The Towering Inferno'' (still my favorite guilty pleasure of all time)... ...this year's ultimate guilty pleasure at the movies. ...the most convincing CGI I've seen in a recent movie, this is a truly harrowing experience — and I mean that in a good way.
