The adventures of writer Newt Scamander in New York's secret community of witches and wizards seventy years before Harry Potter reads his book in school.
Adventure Fantasy - This effects-heavy period fantasy adventure is set in the backstory
of the Harry Potter universe, but with adult characters as the
focus, it doesn't have quite the same kid appeal as those films.
That said, most parents will find this to be safe viewing for the
family though there is some very mildly suggestive humor, and as with
the Harry Potter films, some disturbing imagery that may be
too scary and intense for very young kids. Eddie Redmayne fans will
be pleased though other familiar faces such as Colin Farrell have

PROFANITY: 1 miscellaneous profanity. SEX/NUDITY: None. VIOLENCE: Fights with magic between people and creatures. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Some alcohol and tobacco. ACTION: Chases, fighting, destruction. COMEDY: Silly banter, wisecracks, and sight gags; some very mild suggestive humor.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Good Fantastic Beasts is an enjoyable stand-alone but its position as the progenitor of a new franchise remains unclear. Fantastic Beasts is sufficiently detached from the Harry Potter books/movies so that a prospective viewer doesn't require familiarity with the latter to enjoy the former.
Roger EbertFull Review Good There are plot points that rush by without being fully explained and characters who will hopefully become more fleshed out in later installments. As is all too common in blockbusters lately, violence primarily takes the form of destruction of urban landscapes.
USA TodayFull Review Good Like most franchise-starting vehicles, Fantastic Beasts tries to do way too much in two hours. Wizarding is serious business and some of the darker scenes seem inconsistent with the film's lighthearted nature. ...whether you're a Potterhead or not, Beasts creates a story that's both original and enchanting.
NY PostFull Review Average ... the cast of characters you'll find here is a pale imitation of her Hogwarts heroes. the film's sluggish pacing and weirdly muted delivery — of nearly every character save Miller's — made me long for a "wrap it up, already” spell.
