When mysterious spacecraft touch down across the globe, an elite team lead by expert linguist Louise Banks are brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.
Drama Mystery Sci-Fi - While a science fiction film that has an effects-heavy alien
encounter at the center of its story, this is not an alien invasion
action film but more more an introspective drama, so those expecting
the expected will be disappointed. This is a major showcase for lead
Amy Adams, with the other prominent names of Jeremy Renner and Forest
Whitaker having distinctly secondary roles. Adult subject matter and
some disturbing images make the film not for kids.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Excellent Although Arrival is about first contact with extraterrestrials, it says more about the human experience than the creatures from another world. This is a singularly powerful movie, without question one of 2016's best.
Roger EbertFull Review Good ...viewers should know that Villeneuve's film is not the crowdpleaser of "The Martian," Ridley Scott's big TIFF premiere last year. It's a movie designed to simultaneously challenge viewers, move them and get them talking. For the most part, it succeeds.
USA TodayFull Review Excellent Where Gravity and The Martian proved there was still such a thing as thinking man's sci-fi, Arrival perfects it with an out-of-this-world visual palette, Jóhann Jóhannsson's atmospheric score, and themes to chew on far past the end credits.
NY PostFull Review Very Good "Arrival” doesn't spoon-feed you answers. I heard more than one audience member call it confusing, and I can't say I totally disagree — but I would argue, like its nonlinear aliens, it should be approached with an open mind ...

OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
Based on a theater exit polling of 68 moviegoers:
TEENS: The one male loved it, as did the one female.
TWENTYSOMETHINGS: One of the four males loved it with the remaining three indicating they enjoyed it very much. Two females loved it and two enjoyed it very much rating it "above average."
ADULTS: Overall the adult reviews are very good but not great. About 45% of the males 35% of the females loved it with another 25% of the males and 20% of the females rating it "above average," which indicates they enjoyed it very much. Unfortunately, over 30% of the males and 40% of the females felt it was only an "average" movie (enjoyable but nothing special or memorable). I suspect the strange ending caused most of the "average" reviews because it was a very entertaining movie up to the end.
