An aspiring actress, serves lattes to movie stars in between auditions and a jazz musician, scrapes by playing cocktail party gigs in dingy bars, but as success mounts they are faced with decisions that begin to fray the fragile fabric of their love affair, and the dreams they worked so hard to maintain in each other threaten to rip them apart.
Comedy Drama Musical - This is an old-fashioned, burst-into-song-and dance musical, and as
such the appeal of this film skews a little older than most films
featuring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in the leads. But fans of
theirs of all ages will have plenty to savor here; the only other
actor with any substantial screen time is John Legend. Some language
and adult subject matter make the film not for the youngest of kids;
most parents would find this to be safe for pre-teens and up.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Very Good La La Land isn't just the best made-for-the-screen musical to reach theaters in a very long time, it's arguably the best (non-animated) cinematic musical of any kind since 1986's delightful Little Shop of Horrors.
Roger EbertFull Review Very Good "La La Land” serves to remind us that movies can still be magical, and they can still provide the channel for us to see magic in the world around us. This is a beautiful film about love and dreams, and how the two impact each other.
NY PostFull Review Above Average Neither a brilliant comedy like "Singin' in the Rain” nor imbued with tragic grandeur like "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,” "La La Land” deserves credit for high spirits even if it's essentially a collection of glamorous throwback music videos for so-so songs.

Being a movie that frequently bursts into song and dance, it's not going to be for everyone, but for those who enjoy this type of movie, "La La Land" is a movie you won't want to miss.
