Frank is a single man raising a child prodigy - his spirited young niece Mary. Frank's plans for a normal school life for Mary are foiled when the seven-year-old's mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank's formidable mother whose plans for her granddaughter threaten to separate Frank and Mary.
Drama - Even though one of the main characters is a young child, this drama
is aimed at adult audiences. Most families will find this to be
fairly safe viewing for young kids though the overall subject matter
would not be of interest. There is some language and alcohol
drinking. Fans of Chris Evans will especially enjoy.
Octavia Spencer's part is fairly small.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Good The trailer is awful but that's often the case with serious movies that can't be reduced to two minutes of clips. Gifted deserves a chance. It's emotionally satisfying and, excepting some contortions during the final act, intellectually rewarding.
Roger EbertFull Review Good ...even the most high-concept movie is execution-dependent, and the execution here is far better than the premise leads one to expect. If "Gifted” works for you as it did me, it's mostly because of the cast, but also the way the story unpeels.
USA TodayFull Review Good ...heartfelt and uplifting comedy/drama... The film is decidedly emotionally manipulative without being cloying, and often finds real humor in the complicated situation that arises around a genius 7-year-old, played by Mckenna Grace.
Slant MagazineFull Review Below Average Gifted's notes are crowded out by the screenplay's plot machinations and emotional manipulations.
