Evacuation of Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire, Canada, and France, who were cut off and surrounded by the German army from the beaches and harbor of Dunkirk, France, between May 26- June 04, 1940, during Battle of France in World War II.
Action Drama - This is a historical war film that has an ensemble cast mostly of
unknown British actors. Recognizable actors such as Tom Hardy,
Kenneth Branagh, and Mark Rylance are just part of the ensemble and
have limited screen time. While violence is not graphic, there are a
number of intense war combat and action sequences that will be strong
for kids, who would not be interested anyhow.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Very Good This accomplished, exceptional piece of cinema delivers summer-scale spectacle, albeit without the escapism audiences often crave from blockbuster releases at this time of the year. The experience is primal yet satisfies intellectually and emotionally.
Roger EbertFull Review Very Good ...this is a pile-driver of a movie, dropping one visual or aural bomb after another, with barely a pause to contemplate what it's just shown you. To watch it is to feel beleaguered. The situations and images are so vivid that the score often seems to be trying to rescue a film that doesn't need its help.
USA TodayFull Review Very Good ...Nolan's feat is undeniable: He's made an immersive war movie that celebrates the good of mankind while also making it clear that no victory is without sacrifice. Dunkirk is also one of the best-scored films in recent memory...
NY PostFull Review Good The tension starts from minute one and doesn't let up until the credits roll... "Dunkirk” satisfies as a brisk, gripping survival story. At only 107 minutes, it's also astonishingly short in an era when most movies needlessly run on long beyond the two-hour mark.
