The Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, roams an Old West-like landscape where "the world has moved on" in pursuit of the man in black. Also searching for the fabled Dark Tower, in the hopes that reaching it will preserve his dying world.
Action Adventure Horror - This is an effects-heavy science fiction/fantasy action-adventure
based on the popular Stephen King novel series. While top-billed
stars Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey do have prominent roles as
the hero and villain respectively, the main character is played by
young actor Tom Taylor. Some intense action and scary moments make
the film not for kids.
PROFANITY: 2 S-words; very few others. SEX/NUDITY: None. VIOLENCE: Fights and shootings with very minimal blood. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Some alcohol. ACTION: Chases, fights, gunplay, explosions, destruction. COMEDY: Some banter and wisecracks.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Average The Dark Tower isn't a bad movie even though there's a clumsiness to its narrative and a cheapness to its appearance. Instead, it would be better to call it superficial, uninspired, and forgettable. For many, reading The Dark Tower is a rich and rewarding experience. It may be hard to find anyone who will say the same thing about watching the movie.
Roger EbertFull Review Below Average ...this isn't just a mediocre movie—although it is most definitely that—it is a wasted opportunity... ...it's more forgettable than loathsome, the kind of movie that occasionally rubs salt in your wounds by reminding you what could have been, but mostly just dissipates from memory as it's playing.
USA TodayFull Review Poor ...a mediocre action film with uninspired battles and iffy special effects. What could have been the next Game of Thrones or The Lord of the Rings is instead more akin to a 1990s Steven Seagal movie (and not one of the good ones).
NY PostFull Review Poor Granted, it's a challenge for filmmakers to distill King's eight-book "Dark Tower” series into something resembling a coherent movie. But with what they have now, audiences will wish McConaughey would just blow up the tower already and put a Starbucks there instead.
