Critic's Review Heading

Berardinelli, Internet Critic Full Review
Good ...has no interest in playing by the rules and never tries to. Its affinity for the bizarre and outlandish doesn't always work in its favor – the characters feel too much like a writer's construct for them to be accepted as "real” people – but the net result is deeply unsettling and hard to shake.

Roger Ebert Full Review
Very Good ...chilling and breathtaking... ...a mesmerizing thriller, a movie that asks questions with no good answers and traps us within its terrifying and bizarre situation with little hope for a happy ending. ...this is one of the most unforgettable films of the year.

Rolling Stone Full Review
Very Good ...profoundly disturbing, demonically funny Lanthimos puzzle. Lanthimos does not coddle his audience. His M.O. is to shock, provoke and leave you talking to the voices inside your own head. The choice is yours.

Slant Magazine Full Review
Above Average The characters' emotional vacancy feels like another auteurist tic to which Lanthimos is dauntlessly committed. The film, and the world it conjures, feel colorless and airless. It's hermetically surreal. A tragedy isn't tragic if its conclusion is devoid of emotion. It's a meaningless pontification, no matter how eloquently delivered.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE
Dr. Steven Murphy is a renowned cardiovascular surgeon presiding over a spotless household with his ophthalmologist wife Anna and their two exemplary children, 12-year-old Bob and 14-year-old Kim. Lurking at the margins of his idyllic suburban existence is Martin, a fatherless teen who Steven has covertly taken under his wing. As Martin begins insinuating himself into the family's life in ever-more unsettling displays, the full scope of his intent becomes menacingly clear when he confronts Steven with a long-forgotten transgression that will shatter the Murphy family's domestic bliss.
