Roman J. Israel, Esq. is a dramatic thriller set in the underbelly of the overburdened Los Angeles criminal court system. He is a driven, idealistic defense attorney whose life is upended when a turbulent series of events challenge the activism that has defined his career.
Drama - This drama is a major showcase for star Denzel Washington, whose
atypically quirky and eccentric character will be a surprise and
delight to his fans. Colin Farrell has the most prominent
supporting role. Some language and mild violence make the film not
for kids, but then the film is largely targeted to older adults.
Roger EbertFull Review Poor ...the kind of horrendous hot mess an actor makes directly after he wins the Oscar. ...lifeless story... ...lifeless, interminable movie plays as if the filmmakers threw the footage up in the air and edited it in the order it hit the floor.
NY PostFull Review Good There's a lot going on here, but Washington's complex, emotionally turbulent performance makes it all work. If you were expecting "Roman J. Israel, Esq.” to tackle relevant legal and social issues, stay home...What you'll get at the movie theater is a more grounded, moving and thoroughly engrossing "How To Get Away With Murder.”
Rolling StoneFull Review Good ...Gilroy's movie is above standard-issue legal thriller but below the transcendent personal drama it aspires to be. No matter. The very fact that it aspires at all makes it a rare bird in paycheck Hollywood. Illuminated by Washington's humane artistry, Roman J. Israel, Esq. earns our respect.
