Marlo, a mother of three including a newborn, is gifted a night nanny by her brother. Hesitant to the extravagance at first, Marlo comes to form a unique bond with the thoughtful, surprising, and sometimes challenging young nanny named Tully.
Comedy Drama - This is a sometimes dark comedy/drama aimed at women, especially
mothers. Charlize Theron fans will definitely enjoy as this
showcases both her comedic and dramatic chops. Adult subject matter,
sexual content, and language make this film not for kids.
PROFANITY: 18 F-words; 8 S-words; a few others. SEX/NUDITY: Brief sex without nudity; brief non-sexual nudity. VIOLENCE: None. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Some alcohol. ACTION: A car crash. COMEDY: Banter, wisecracks, often dark; kid humor.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Above Average The first 30 minutes are uncommonly good, which may be why the spike of disappointment is so acute when the film fails to maintain that level for its entire length. New mothers in particular may relish the wish-fulfillment and escapism Tully offers but that's a narrow demographic.
Roger EbertFull Review Very Good "Tully" unearths uncomfortable truths in a wry, wise way. It features Cody's hyper-verbal brand of snark, cynicism and subtle poignancy, but it's tinged with the wistful perspective that comes from hard-earned maturity and experience.
USA TodayFull Review Good ...captures the complete exhaustion of parenthood in funny and profound fashion. Tully nails how every parent needs to maintain identity and some semblance of sanity amid spilled breast milk and sleepless nights, plus delivers on the occasional hilarity that ensues when raising kids — the levity that keeps it all from being overwhelming.
NY PostFull Review Good Reitman directs with an empathy for mothering that never shies away from its darker side... Theron, sporting a flabby post-pregnancy belly, draws you into her existential ennui — but there's always a vein of Cody's snappy humor underneath, paired with a fierce maternal instinct.
