Based on the true story of survival, a young couple's chance encounter leads them first to love, and then on the adventure of a lifetime as they face one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history.
Action Adventure Drama - This fact-based adventure/drama is mostly a two-character piece, so
fans of the two stars, Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin, will enjoy
though the focus is more squarely on the former. Language is
minimal, but there is brief non-sexual nudity, frequent alcohol, and
some intense scenes
of sailing in stormy waters that would be of concern for parents of
the very young.
PROFANITY: 1 F-word; 2 S-word; one other. SEX/NUDITY: Fleeting non-sexual nudity. VIOLENCE: Glimpses of bleeding wounds; people thrown by rough waters. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Marijuana and frequent alcohol. ACTION: A big scene of boating in rough waters. COMEDY: None.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Good Tami's determination and competence keep the movie from becoming an ordeal. It's an honest, if somewhat neutered, account of what happens in situations like this, and worth seeing if you have an interest in (Wo)man vs. Nature battles.
Roger EbertFull Review Good What human beings will do to survive, facing a Mother Nature who seems to have a vested interest in killing them, is, yes, awe-inspiring. It makes you think, "How would I face such challenges? Would I be as resourceful as Tami? Or would I give up?"
NY PostFull Review Above Average "Adrift” is paced like its title, and the story's momentum is slowed somewhat by constant toggling between past and present. "Adrift” is worth a watch, even if its drama (perhaps inevitably) pales in comparison to the source material.
Rolling StoneFull Review Good What keeps Adrift from feeling like just a travelogue tacked on to a tragi-sploitive star vehicle is, ironically enough, its star. Woodley has always been great when it comes to bringing the radiance – she's like a sunbeam made sentient...
