Superfly - the film that helped define a genre in its characters, look, sound, and feel - is reimagined with Director X, director of legendary music videos, introducing it to a new generation.
Action Crime Thriller - This is a violent action film loosely based on the 1973 film of the
same name--so those expecting any sort of faithful remake will be
disappointed. The veteran faces in the cast such as Michael K.
Williams and Esai Morales only have small supporting roles, with the
leads played by relative newcomers Trevor Jackson, Lex Scott Davis,
and Jason Mitchell. Constant language and graphic violence as well
as explicit sex and drug use make this not for kids.
PROFANITY: Well over 30 F-words; over 30 S-words; 5 GD's; many others. SEX/NUDITY: A threesome with a man and two women with related nuditys. VIOLENCE: Fights, shootings with blood. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, cocaine. ACTION: Fights, shootouts, chases, crashes, explosions. COMEDY: Rare comic lines.
Roger EbertFull Review Above Average "SuperFly” works best when it's attempting to bring elements of the original film up to date. Director X and Tse accomplish this with some very amusing in-jokes and timely commentary...
USA TodayFull Review Above Average Somewhere between ridiculously stylish and stylishly ridiculous lies "Superfly," a modern so-bad-it's-kinda-good remake of the 1970s blaxploitation classic that offers as much close-up twerking as kung fu fighting.
NY PostFull Review Above Average Making his feature directorial debut, Director X — whose background is in music videos (Rihanna, Drake, Kendrick Lamar) — shoots in Atlanta instead of Harlem, glamming up the story with fast cars, hip-hop and lots more women than the original...
Rolling StoneFull Review Below Average All the car chases and gunplay in the world can't disguise the void where characterization should be. Nothing about this trendy, tarted-up Superfly feels lived in or authentic. Look, it's not like the original was any great shakes as a movie.
