A mother concerned about her young son's disturbing behavior thinks something supernatural may be affecting him.
Horror Thriller - While this horror movie features a child at the center, it is much
too scary and violent for kids. Taylor Schilling is the only widely
recognizable face. Language is moderate, but it is also sometimes
delivered by a child.
Roger EbertFull Review Below Average McCarthy's direction is so sleepy that a number of key scenes fizzle out before they can pay off with the next big jump scare. "The Prodigy" doesn't work because Buhler's scenario is too predictable to be involving and McCarthy's direction is too indecisive to be gripping.
NY PostFull Review Poor Will you be able to guess every predictable plot machination after that? Yes. Will they still scare the hell out of you on occasion? Yes. But does that make this sadistic film about a hand-collecting, reincarnated serial killer of Central European descent worth watching — at all? That's a firm no.
Slant MagazineFull Review Average Schilling is impressive as a mother whose moral compass becomes unfixed. But the film cops out, introducing a deus ex machina that allows the script to skirt its difficult questions for a more sequel-friendly finale.
