A loving mom becomes compelled to reconnect with her creative passions after years of sacrificing herself for her family. Her leap of faith takes her on an epic adventure that jump-starts her life and leads to her triumphant rediscovery.
Comedy Drama - This comedy/drama is a star showcase for Cate Blanchett, with Billy Crudup also having a substantial role. Other familiar faces such as Laurence Fishburne have only brief appearances. Language and adult subject matter make the film not for kids.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Above Average The movie captures the spirit and tone of the book but not necessarily the nuances. Anyone unfamiliar with the source material may notice the hesitant and cumbersome quality of the narrative's progression.
Roger EbertFull Review Below Average I'm not convinced Linklater knew where his movie should end or what he wanted to say by telling this story. Nor does there seem to be a clear visual style... ...the movie version of "Where'd You Go, Bernadette” shifts the perspective of the story from Bee's search for her runaway mom onto Bernadette's shoulders.
NY PostFull Review Poor Linklater, a director who usually earns his sentiment, just can't get the tone right. "Bernadette” is supposed to skewer the norms of family, suburban life and motherhood. While Bernadette should be a creature out of Wes Anderson, Blanchett and her director opt for "The Addams Family” instead. Nothing about it works.
Rex ReedFull Review Below Average But as troublesome and overstuffed as Blanchett's performance might be, it's also one of the few interesting things going on in this troublesome and overstuffed misfire of a book adaptation.
