Notes:
Based on the true story of a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod.
.
Drama - While being the center of all of the advertising, Tom Hanks's portrayal of beloved children's television icon Fred Rogers is not the focus of this fact-based drama, but a journalist character played by Matthew Rhys. But while he is only a supporting character, Mr. Rogers's personality and his approach to life is the main thematic concern. The film is generally family safe with very little language, some alcohol, and a brief violent moment, but kids will likely not be interested in the film.
PROFANITY: A few miscellaneous profanities. SEX/NUDITY: None. VIOLENCE: A punch and a push. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Some alcohol. ACTION: None. COMEDY: Some banter, wisecracks, kid humor.
Roger EbertFull Review Very Good Mr. Rogers isn't the main character of the movie. ...the movie instead follows a cynical journalist assigned to write an inoffensive puff piece on the popular kid's TV show host ...isn't so much a biopic as it is a way to look at the way Mr. Rogers affected generations of children, young and grown.
USA TodayFull Review Good ...a story built on Rogers' tenets that feels resonant and necessary for today, and bringing to bear the warm and fuzzy qualities of the small-screen legend, Hanks proves he's just as timeless himself. ...smartly avoids the overly sentimental biopic route. Instead, it embraces the template of a well-worn holiday classi...
Rolling StoneFull Review Very Good Hanks, who captures the man's precise diction and soothing intonation, quickly moves past imitation to find the nurturing soul that Mister Rogers opens to the world; not just to children, but to skeptics... A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is a movie that speaks from the heart. Let it in.
Slant MagazineFull Review Very Good You'll likely never doubt the reality of what you're seeing at any point, though there's something unsettling about the precision of both Hanks's performance and the frame housing it—uncanny valley effects that have been achieved through fully analog means.
