A team of friends return to Jumanji to rescue one of their own but discover that nothing is as they expect. The players need to brave parts unknown, from arid deserts to snowy mountains, in order to escape the world's most dangerous game.
Action Adventure Comedy - Like the first film, this is an effects-heavy science fiction adventure comedy aimed at all ages. While most families, especially with those with pre-teens and up, will find this safe viewing, there is some language, very mildly crude humor, and intense action sequences that may be of concern to parents of the youngest of children. Fans of the main returning stars Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan will again enjoy, and Awkwafina and Danny DeVito are the substantial new additions to the cast.
Berardinelli, Internet CriticFull Review Above Average ...as with any derivative sequel, the story isn't as fresh, the action isn't as engaging, and the comedy isn't as funny (although, to be fair, there are some solid laughs). The Next Level feels a little too much like a money grab and, although moderately entertaining on a popcorn level, there's a sense of missed opportunity.
Roger EbertFull Review Good As with the first film, the humor and excitement are nimbly balanced so it never gets too scary or silly, and the focus is more on friendship than romance. This time, there is a light touch of poignance as well that makes the message about friendship more meaningful. And like all good video games, there's a hint of yet another level...
NY PostFull Review Above Average ...the addition of Glover and Danny DeVito keeps "Jumanji: The Next Level” afloat, even with barely the whisper of a plot. ...for a generation that never got its own "Freaky Friday,” at least director Jake Kasdan's sequel serves up a handful of body-swapping laughs.
Slant MagazineFull Review Poor ...visibly strains to justify its existence beyond the desire for profit. The sight of Johnson and Hart shaking up their stale partnership by play-acting as old men briefly enlivens The Next Level after 40 minutes of laborious setup and leaden jokes.
